Michael Flynn Caught In New Scandal Over Lobbying For Turkey; Registered As A Foreign Agent

Michael Flynn may have gotten himself into trouble once again.

Michael Flynn started off this year as President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser. Flynn was forced to resign just 24 days after taking the job after facts arose about Flynn misleading certain officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about telecommunications with Russian diplomats.

Flynn was forced to walk away from his position when it was revealed that he intentionally mislead the Vice President about communications with Russian diplomats

Now Flynn seems to be approaching high water once again. This time it involves Flynn’s apparent lobbying for Turkey during the Trump campaign.

Flynn registered with the Justice Department as a foreign agent on Tuesday, the 8th. According to the NY Daily News, under the Foreign Agent Registration Act, “citizens who lobby on behalf of foreign governments or political entities must disclose their work to the Justice Department. Willfully failing to register is a felony”. The Daily News also reports, though, that the Justice Department rarely actually files criminal charges in cases like this.

Flynn’s consulting firm, Flynn Intel Group, Inc., reportedly recieved $530,000 from a Turkish client last year. Flynn’s attorney, Robert Kelner has spoken on the issue, first stating that Flynn’s firm was shut down in mid-November of 2016, but went on to say that he is now registering with the Justice Department because his lobby work “could be construed to have principally benefited the Republic of Turkey.”

USA Today reports that Flynn’s firm was in the works with another consulting firm, Ivono BV. Ivono is owned by a Turkish businessman with ties to Turkey’s current President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. If these ties are as close as reports indicate, it could be very possible that Flynn’s involvement with Ivono could benefit the Republic of Turkey.

Ekim Alptekin, the founder of Ivono BV, went to Twitter to try and oust the notion that Flynn benefitted Turkish authorities in any way.  He also tweeted that at the time of the transactions, it seemed more likely that Hillary would win, so if his intentions were to benefit Turkey, he would have hired John Podesta, who was a chairman on Hillary’s camapign, instead.
