ANTIFA and the ANTI-ANTIFA: The Battle for America Where Both Sides Are Lost.
It has been a long four months of smoke and glass shards in the cities across America. In Dallas three people were stabbed, in cities along the west coast violent clashes have erupted between what the media has called “protesters and pro-Trump groups”.
ANTIFA has a long and sordid history in the United States. The ideology is closely linked with Communism but finds traction in its opposition to racism, Antisemitism and NAZI style fascism. These groups were opposed to the authoritarianism and the racist anti-Semitic nationalism of the NAZI’s not the vaguely socialist economic policies of the Third Reich. In many ways Hitler used the guise of socialism (popular in Europe at the time) to push his unique brand of fascism. Anti-Fascists of today the anarchists the communists and the socialists have found a common enemy by generalizing trump supporters with the neo-Nazi’s that have latched on to the #MAGA culture like a vampire squid.
DISCLAIMER: MOST TRUMP SUPPORTERS ARE NOT RACIST NAZI’S.
I hope by putting that in all caps I can avoid the bevy of #NotAllTrumpSupporters comments.
FACT: Nazi’s love Donald Trump. Many people opposed to Donald Trump think “Make America Great Again” Is refereeing to a time in the past when America was a whole lot more white. Many Nazi’s support Trump because they think when he says “Make America Great Again” he’s referring to a time when America was a whole lot more white.
Personally, I don’t think Donald thinks all that much about race. But the people that oppose him do. And the Nazi’s that support him do. And to them his message is equally racially fueled for the exact same reasons.
White nationalism, Nazi’s and Nazi sympathizers have been emboldened by Donald Trump’s nationalism. His anti-illegal immigrant message resonates with them. Obviously they wish he would go much further but he alludes to their desires in his rhetoric. His campaign promise to ban all Muslim people from entering the US was exactly what you would read on the Stormfront Aryan nation web page.
Let me be very clear. JUST BECAUSE DONALD TRUMP’S MESSAGE SPEAKS TO NAZI’S DOES NOT MEAN DONALD TRUMP IS A NAZI. But it is important to point out that ANTIFA’s message does not come from the ether. They are fighting against a real problem, an honest issue, one that the Trump administration itself is very concerned with separating itself from. But to say that the ANTIFA reaction is an overreaction would be an understatement of great proportions.
Look I get it. NAZI’S are bad. In other news, the sky is blue and taxes suck. Reasonable people do not think that being white makes them superior. Reasonable people do not think that “Making America Great Again” is synonymous with being white. Most of his supporters think Trump wants to make America work for the common person again instead of the elites that have been running this place.
ANTIFA ignores all those people. To ANTIFA all Trump supporters are Richard Spencer or the StormFront. To be fair, a loud but small minority of people that show up to Pro-Trump events fly Nazi flags and make Nazi salutes. ANTIFA is an overreaction to a pretty minimal problem.
By attacking all Trump supporters as if they were the same as the Nazi’s that have latched on to the MAGA# movement ANTIFA has alienated the working class they claim to defend. To ANTIFA they are defending America from NAZI’s. To Trump supporters they are just irrationally lashing out at them and calling them Nazi’s when most of them just hate the mainstream media and the establishment. The average Trump supporter and the average ANTIFA member would probably find a lot in common if they sat and talked. Unfortunately, in the age of information we sit in our over-saturated bubbles and never talk to those we think we oppose.
FACT: Trump supporters have been attacked for supporting their President. ANTIFA and BAMN have escalated this conflict and given rise to the ANTI-ANTIFA movement.
ANTIFA rose from fear of Nazi’s and violent reaction to that fear. ANTI-ANTIFA rose as a reaction to violence against a people unfairly associated with Nazi’s. This has been the pattern for a long time between the far left and the far right in this country.
PC culture rose as an extreme reaction to racism.
ANTI-PC culture and the “ALT RIGHT” Rose as an extreme reaction to perceived censorship.
ANTIFA then rose as an extreme reaction to the Nazi fascist leanings on the Alt Right.
ANTI-ANTIFA then rose as an extreme reaction to ANTIFA attacking all Trump supporters as Nazis.
In an escalation game everyone loses. Eventually someone is going to bring a gun and these stupid games with firecrackers and smoke bombs are going to turn into real war.
This issue has a long history dating back to world war two and probably before that. In many ways, we are reliving the past and redrawing old battle lines. How do we break the cycle? How do we move forward from here?
I’m on the left and I hate ANTIFA. I love our country and I love the first amendment. I will never try to shut you down or silence you. I want to debate you, I want to hear from you, I want to verbally spar with you! Do you know what debate you always lose? It’s the one you never show up to. So many on the extreme left have forgotten this.
Hate speech is protected by our constitution. What ANTIFA and BAMN need to remember is the reason hate speech is protected in our constitution is because those in power like to redefine “hate speech” to fit an agenda.
I will gladly allow NAZI’s to march through my town spitting white supremacist garbage. I will gladly take the time to refute them and point out the hate and hypocrisy that they spew. This is America. All ideas are welcome, and may the best ones’ win. God bless you and your family and God bless America.
